Очень и очень тебе благодарен. Но позволь сказать откровенно, что «''Царица поневоле''» страдает отсутствием интересного драматического действия. Для музыки в твоём сценарии много хороших данных; пляски, хоры, шествия — всё это прелесть, — но нужны также характеры, движение, словом, завязка и развязка интересной интриги. Твои Египтяне слишком смахивают на общеупотребительных театральных и особенно балетных королей, царских дочек и т. п. Но в тебе есть все данные для отличного либреттиста, и я не намерен выпускать тебя из своих когтей. Напиши, дружище, ещё что-нибудь. Нельзя ли каких-нибудь новых и сильных драматических положений? Нельзя ли с твоим знанием Египта воспроизвести историю Иосифа Прекрасного у Фараона или что-нибудь вроде этого? Пожалуйста, голубчик, поищи и не особенно торопись: я готов ждать хоть два месяца. Я убеждён, что ты можешь выдумать отличную штуку. Ещё раз от души благодарю. Не сердись за откровенность и поищи что-нибудь.

I'm ever so grateful to you. But allow me to tell you frankly that "''The Reluctant Queen''" is marred by the absence of an interesting dramatic plot <ref name="note1"/>. In your scenario there are many good elements for music — dances, choruses, marches. All that is wonderful, but it's also essential to have characters and action — in short, the tying and unravelling of an interesting plot. Your Egyptians resemble too much the kings, princesses, etc., that are in general use in the theatre, especially in ballets. Still, you do have all the makings of an excellent librettist, and I don't intend to release you from my clutches. Write something else, old chap. Wouldn't you be able to come up with some new and powerful dramatic situations? Given your knowledge of Egypt, could you not retell the story of Joseph the Fair <ref name="note2"/> at the court of Pharaoh, or something of that sort? Please, golubchik, have a good look and don't feel you have to hurry — I'm even prepared to wait for two months. I am certain that you can devise something splendid. Once again I thank you heartily. Don't be angry because of my frankness and try to find something.
