Ты не можешь себе представить, какое удовольствие доставило мне письмо твоё и как я тронут твоим милым вниманием и памятью обо мне. Я ''страшно, мучительно'' тоскую по родине, и каждая весточка от близкого, дорогого человека для меня неоценимое утешение.

Путешествие моё было вполне благополучно, хотя в течение двух дней нас преследовал жестокий ураган и с непривычки минутами было очень страшно. К счастью, я ехал на одном из громаднейших пароходов французской компании пароходства и благодаря его колоссальным размерам качка была менее чувствительна. Ехал ровно 8 дней.

Здесь меня встретили необыкновенно радушно. Кроме России, я нигде не видел такого сердечного отношения к иностранцам, такой готовности всячески услужить и угодить. На следующий же день по приезде была репетиция. Оркестр очень хорош, особенно деревянные. Состав увеличенный: в 1-х скрипках 11 пультов. Музыканты приняли меня восторженно. Оказывается, что в Америке я гораздо более известен, чем в Европе, и мои сочинения исполняются много и часто. Увертюру «''Гамлет''», которую в Москве ещё ни разу не играли, ''здесь'' играли уже много раз. ''Пятую'' симфонию играли в двух Обществах 2 сезона подряд. Вообще я здесь птица гораздо более важная, чем в Европе. Американская жизнь, нравы, порядки — все это чрезвычайно интересно, оригинально, и на каждом шагу я натыкаюсь на такие явления, которые поражают своей грандиозностью, колоссальностью размеров сравнительно с Европой. Жизнь кипит здесь ключом, и хотя главный интерес её — ''нажива'', однако и к искусству американцы очень внимательны. Громадная зала, которую только что отстроили и по случаю открытия которой я приглашён сюда, служит тому доказательством. Эта многомиллионная постройка сделана на деньги любителей музыки. Эти же богатые любители содержат постоянный оркестр. Ничего подобного у нас нет! Признаюсь, что мне ширина и грандиозность всего предпринимаемого американцами ужасно нравится. Нравится мне также ''комфорт'', о котором они так заботятся. В моем номере, так же как и во всех других номерах всех гостиниц, имеется электрическое и газовое освещение, уборная с ванной и ватерклозетом; масса чрезвычайно удобной мебели, аппарат для разговора с конторой гостиницы в случае надобности и тому подобные не существующие в Европе условия комфорта. Одним словом, страна во многих отношениях очень симпатичная и необыкновенно интересная. О многом расскажу тебе при свидании. Но повторяю, что, меня, несмотря на новость и силу впечатлений, грызёт злейшая тоска по родине и я жажду возвращения домой как недосягаемого блага!

Серия концертов начнётся 5-го числа и кончится 9-го; затем я поеду на Ниагару; 15-го и 18-го у меня концерты в Филадельфии и Балтиморе, а 21-го я выезжаю. О концертах я тебе или напишу, или расскажу устно.

Поведение ''Колонна'' относительно тебя просто непостижимо. Он в Париже говорил мне, что, очень интересуется знакомством с тобой, ибо, много про тебя слышал. Что, касается эпилога трагикомедии с Муз[ыкальным] общ[еством], то меня нисколько не удивляют странности и ребяческие выходки Антона Григ[орьеви]ча. Все, что, ты про него рассказываешь, так согласуется с его, всегдашним самодурством. Я сожалею, что, консерватория лишается счастья иметь во, главе своей такого умного, честного и даровитого деятеля, как ты, — но за тебя лично, я очень рад. Нет сомнения, что, тебе легче переносить тягости театральной службы, к которым ты привык, чем консерваторские дрязги. А угроза, что, тебя выгонят, смешна. Несмотря на многие неприятности, испытанные тобой в последнее время в театре, я знаю, что, в сущности тебя ценят, тебя боятся, тобой дорожат.

Перед отъездам в Америку я написал Ивану Ал[ександрови]чу, что, чувствую себя не в силах написать оперу и балет к будущему сезону. Нисколько не раскаиваюсь теперь в этом, ибо, вижу, что, ранее начала июня приняться за работу не могу, а можно ли к сентябрю успешно исполнить подобную работу? Очевидно, если бы я что-нибудь и написал, то написал бы скверно. Скажи ''Ольге Эдуардоовне'' второй (или Варваре Эд[уардов]не), что, я перед ними очень виноват: забыл послать портрет сочинительнице стихов. Привезу из Америки. Я ужасно также виноват перед ''И. А. Мельниковым'', но я ему напишу отдельно на днях!

You cannot imagine how much pleasure your letter gave me <ref name="note1"/>, and how moved I was by your kind attention and thoughts about me. I am ''terribly, excruciatingly'' homesick, and every bit of news from a close, dear person to me is an immeasurable consolation.

My journey was quite satisfactory, although for two days we were pursued by a fierce storm, and we became accustomed to some very terrible moments. Fortunately I travelled on one of the largest steamers of a French shipping company, and thanks to its gigantic size the pitching was less noticeable <ref name="note2"/>.

I have been welcomed here with exceptional hospitality. Outside Russia, I've never seen such a cordial attitude towards foreigners, and a willingness to serve and please in every way. On the very next day after my arrival there was a rehearsal. The orchestra was good, especially the woodwinds. It's composition is large: the 1st violins have 11 desks. The musicians received me enthusiastically. It turns out that I'm far better known in America than in Europe, and many my works are frequently performed. The overture "''[[Hamlet (overture-fantasia)|Hamlet]]''", which has not yet been played once in [[Moscow]] <ref name="note3"/>, has been played many times ''here''. The [[Symphony No. 5|''Fifth'' Symphony]] was played by two societies for 2 seasons in a row. In general I am a far more important bird here than in Europe. American life, manners and customs are all extremely interesting and original, and at every step I am taken aback by phenomena of such grandiose and gigantic dimensions in comparison with Europe. Life is bursting forth here, and although their main interest is ''profit'', the Americans are still very interested in the arts. The huge hall, which has just been constructed, and for whose opening I've been invited here, is testament to that <ref name="note4"/>. This construction has been built on many millions of dollars from music lovers. These wealthy amateurs maintain permanent orchestras. We have nothing comparable to this! I confess that I'm awfully taken with the scale and grandeur of everything the Americans undertake. I also like the ''comfort'' they are concerned about. In my suite, as well as in all the other rooms in all the hotels, there is electric and gas lighting, and a toilet with a bath and water closet, plenty of extremely comfortable furniture, a device for speaking to the hotel office should one require anything, and comfortable circumstances that exist nowhere in Europe. In short, this country is in agreeable and exceptionally interesting in so many respects. But I reiterate that, despite these new and powerful impressions, I am suffering from a malevolent and gnawing homesickness, and am longing to return to my blessed homeland.

The series of concerts begins on the 5th of the month and finishes on the 9th; later I'm going to [[Niagara]]; from the 15th to the 18th I have concerts in [[Philadelphia]] and [[Baltimore]], and I leave on the 21st. I'll either write to you or tell you in person about the concerts.

''[[Colonne]]'s'' behaviour towards you is simply incomprehensible <ref name="note5"/>. In [[Paris]] he told me that he was very interested in becoming acquainted with you, because he had heard so much about you. With regard to the epilogue of the tragi-comedy with the Musical Society, I wasn't in the least surprised by [[Anton Grigoryevich]]'s peculiar and childish antics. Everything that you described is so consistent with his perpetual tyranny. I regret that the conservatory will be the poorer for being deprived of an intelligent, honest and talented figure like you at its head, but for you personally I am very glad. There is no doubt that it will be easier for you to carry the burdens of theatrical life to which you have become accustomed, rather then the conservatory's squabbling. And the threat to expel you is ridiculous. Despite the many troubles you have experienced lately in the theatre, I know for a fact that you are appreciated, respected and cherished.

Before leaving for America I wrote to [[Ivan Aleksandrovich]] that I do not feel able to write the opera and ballet in time for the next season <ref name="note6"/>. I do not regret this now in the least, because I see that I will not be able to set about work before the beginning of June, and so how could it possibly be performed successfully in September? Obviously if I had written anything, it would have been written badly. Tell ''[[Olga Nápravník (daughter)|Olga Eduardovna]]'' the second (or [[Varvara Nápravník|Varvara Eduardovna]]) that I stand guilty before them: I have forgotten to send them a portrait of the author of the poems. I will bring it from America. I'm also being awfully remiss with regard to ''[[Ivan Melnikov|I. A. Melnikov]]'', but I'll write to him separately in a few days!<ref name="note7"/>
