Since this was the only rehearsal, and the German text in the recitatives tripped me up a great deal, for fear of making a hash of it I declined to conduct the first performance. Besides, the kapellmeister here is first class, so it was certainly beneficial for the success of the performance. The production took place yesterday. The performance, so far as the music is concerned, was excellent. Regarding the staging I can say only that it was tolerable. Of course, there were some funny details in the costumes and sets. Tatyana is ''splendid'', graceful, agreeable to the utmost degree. ''Onegin'' has a very good voice. ''Lensky'' wasn't so bad either. The orchestra and chorus were excellent. The success was remarkable, and I was called out after every scene, but without any sort of enthusiasm, more with a tinge of coldness and wariness. Впрочем, Пани, пожалуй, уже нет в Ревеле! Сообщаю вкратце о себе следующее. В Варшаве концерт мой имел большой успех, и вообще меня там очень фетировали. Оттуда проехал сюда, остановившись на сутки в Берлине. Здесь наследующий день приезда была репетиция, которою я дирижировал. Так как репетиция эта была единственная и немецкий текст очень стеснял меня в речитативах, — то, убоявшись напутать, я отказался от дирижирования на первом представлении. К тому же капельмейстер здесь превосходный, так что оно было безусловно на пользу удачного исполнения. Вчера состоялось представление. Исполнение, с музыкальной стороны, превосходное. Относительно постановки можно только сказать, что она была сносная. Конечно, не обошлось без забавных подробностей в костюмах, декорациях. Татьяна ''отличная'', грациозная, симпатичная в высшей степени. ''Онегин'' по голосу очень хорош. ''Ленский'' тоже весьма недурён. Оркестр и хоры превосходные. Успех был значительный, вызывали после каждой картины, но без всяких восторгов, скорее с оттенком холодности и недоверия.

Сегодня еду прямо в Париж, где проведу около 2 недель. Оттуда в Голландию, а в первых числах февраля буду в России. Целую, обнимаю бессчётно.
