Наконец, имею о тебе известие. Живо соболезную твоим страданиям от ''кавказской'' жары. Что может быть хуже! Здесь тоже невыразимо жарко!

Потрудись, голубчик, написать Томасу, что я если и уступлю из 10000 долларов, то очень немного, а именно одну пятую. Меньше как за 8000 я не возьму. На кой черт мне мучиться, страдать, насиловать себя, если выгоды не предстоит. Ведь я в состоянии половину гонорара там же издержать, — ну, хоть половину вывезу. А если ты признаешь более благоразумным стоять на 10000, — то тем лучше. Напиши также, что для меня будет огромным облегчением, если ты поедешь со мной. Впрочем, я нисколько не сомневаюсь, что они не дадут ни 10, ни 8 тысяч. И это будет для меня самое приятное разрешение вопроса.

Томас мне писал, и я ему отвечал, — но лишь на музыкальные его вопросы. Он спрашивал, есть ли у меня вокальное-сочинение (не опера), и я указал на кантату «''Москва''». Если дело состоится, то нужно озаботиться о переводе.

Надеюсь недели через три тебя увидеть.

Finally, I have news from you <ref name="note1"/>. I can sympathize all too readily with your suffering from the ''Caucasian'' heat. What could be worse! It's indescribably hot here too!

Golubchik, kindly write to [[Thomas]] that were I to accept 10,000 dollars then this would be very little, namely one-fifth <ref name="note2"/>. I won't take less than 8,000. Why the hell should I force myself to suffer agonies for no benefit. After all, then half my fee will go towards expenses, — well almost half. But if you consider it more sensible to stand firm on the 10,000, then so much the better. Write also that I should be enormously relived if you were to go with me. However, I am in no doubt that they won't give either 10 or 8 thousand. And that would be the most satisfactory outcome of the matter for me <ref name="note3"/>.

[[Thomas]] wrote to me, and I replied to him <ref name="note4"/> — but only his musical questions. He asked if I had a vocal work (not an opera), and I indicated the cantata "''[[Moscow (cantata)|Moscow]]''". If the deal comes off then you'll need to arrange for a translation.

Hopefully I shall see you in three weeks.
