Так досадно, — сейчас кончил корректуру балета (стр[аницы] 170–231) и теперь не знаю, что делать. Новых корректурных посылок нет, а начинать другое дело не стоит. Время напрасно пропадает! За облегчённое переложение приниматься не могу, пока не кончу корректур. Ради Бога, присылай корректуры! Поскорей бы сбыть этот тяжёлый, ужасный труд! Впрочем, надо отдать справедливость твоим гравёрам, — они сделали огромные успехи, и я вполне ими доволен. Пусть только внимательно исправляют.

Модест пишет мне уже второй раз о своём отчаянии по поводу скверно напечатанного либретто «''Иоланты''». ''Пришли, пожалуйста'', хочется узнать, в чем дело. Но отчего, в самом деле, ты не послал ему на просмотр одной корректуры? Зачем было так торопиться? Если правда, что изуродованы его стихи и перепутаны персонажи, — то ведь и в сам м деле есть с чего в отчаянье прийти!

Известие о смерти ''С. М. Третьякова'' расстроило меня гораздо больше, чем можно было бы предположить, т. е. до такой степени, что я сегодня вследствие этого скверно себя чувствую. Правда, что я его видел совершенно здоровым и цветущим 2½ недели тому назад.

Корректур, корректур, корректур!!!!

It's such a nuisance: I've just finished the proofs of the ballet <ref name="note1"/> (pages 170–231), and now I don't know what to do. There's no package of new proofs, and it's not worth starting anything else. A pointless waste of time! I need to finish the proofs before I set about the simplified arrangement. For God's sake send the proofs! I cannot wait to dispose of this burdensome, awful work! However, to be fair to your engravers, they have made tremendous progress, and I'm completely satisfied with them. So long as they are careful with the corrections.

[[Modest]] has written to me for a second time in despair concerning the badly printed libretto of "''[[Iolanta]]''". ''Please send it to me'', as I want to see for myself. But why, in point of fact, didn't you send him a single proof? What was the rush? If it's true that the words have been corrupted and characters confused, then things have indeed become desperate!

News of ''[[Sergey Tretyakov|S. M. Tretyakov]]''{{'}}s death upset me more than I might have anticipated, i.e. to such an extent that I'm feeling bad today. The truth is that I saw him completely healthy and hearty 2½ weeks ago <ref name="note2"/>.
