Я дал слово быть в конце сентября в Москве, дабы присутствовать на конкурсе кандидатов на место капельмейстера Малого театра. Между тем встречается помеха исполнить данное слово. Дело в том, что мне необходимо присутствовать на последних репетициях «''Пиковой дамы''» в Праге и ''желательно'' быть на 1-ом представлении. Я обещал приехать в Прагу за 4 дня до представления. Но оно все откладывается; сперва хотели дать оперу в конце сентября (по ихнему стилю), потом 8 октября, и вчера я собирался выехать в Прагу, с тем чтобы уехать в Россию, — но вдруг получаю депешу, что опера отложена до 12 окт[ября]/30 сент[ября]. Таким образом, я должен потерять ещё 3 дня и, если Бог даст, первое представление состоится во вторник 12 окт[ября]/30 сент[ября], могу вы ехать по нашему стилю лишь 1-го октября. Кроме того, мне необходимо в Петербурге пробыть по крайней мере 2 дня, так что в Москве я буду не ранее 7-го октября. Если можно подождать моего приезда, — то прошу отложить ''конкурс''; если же нельзя, то делать нечего, пусть дело решится без меня. I gave my word to be in [[Moscow]] at the end of September, in order to attend the contest for the position of conductor at the Maly Theatre. In the meantime something has occurred to prevent me from fulfilling that promise. The fact is that I need to be present at the last rehearsals of "''[[The Queen of Spades]]''" in [[Prague]], and ''ideally'' also at the 1st performance. I promised to be in [[Prague]] for the four days prior to the performance. But this has all been postponed; they first wanted to put on the opera at the end of September (in their style), then 8 October, and yesterday I was about to leave for [[Prague]] on my way to Russia, but suddenly I received a message that the opera had been postponed until 12 October/30 September <ref name="note1"/>. Therefore I have to lose another 3 days and if, God willing, the first production really does take place on Tuesday 12 October/30 September, I can only leave on 1 October our style. Besides, I need to stay in [[Petersburg]] for at least 2 days, so that I cannot be in [[Moscow]] earlier than 7th October <ref name="note2"/>.
