I'm glad that you are happy with your life in [[Hapsal]], and that the children are well. As for Lyubov Petrovna — you can be sure that she is one of those creaky saplings who outlive the mighty oaks. Nevertheless, it is desirable that she gather her strength. You describe the boys, Lev and Kotka, in their perpetual struggle and inconstant friendship, superbly. The pedants are also good — I just can't see them.

			I have nothing in particular to say about myself. Work goes on. I think that the symphony I've now orchestrated will prove to be, if not the best, then one of my best works; at least, it's ages since I've been so pleased with myself as I am now. I often receive letters from [[Modest]]. He writes that [[Lyolya]] is completely happy and content. Katya gives the impression not of a wife, but a visiting relative.

			But general, she seems to show a great deal of tact.

			[[Bob]] is miserable, as usual. What you tell me about [[Katu]] and [[Laroche]] has astounded me. I am glad — but somehow I'm not sure it will last! God grant that Pyotr Ivanovich will manage to find something! In less than a month we shall probably see each other!

Ты позволяешь мне не писать, но твоё письмо такое милое, интересное и дружеское, что у меня потребность поблагодарить тебя. Радуюсь, что ты довольна гапсальским житьём и что детям хорошо. Что касается Любовь Петровны, — то поверь, что это одно из тех скрипучих деревьев, которые переживают здоровенных дубов. Тем не менее желательно, чтобы она набралась сил. Мальчишек, Леву и Котьку, в их непрерывной борьбе, сменяемой дружбой, ты описала превосходно. Хороши также и педанчики — я так и вижу их!

Про себя ничего особенного сказать не имею. Работа идёт. Думаю, что симфония, которую я теперь инструментовал, окажется если не лучшим, то одним из лучших моих произведений; по крайней мере давно я не был собой так доволен, как теперь. От Модеста имею часто письма. Про Лёву пишет, что совершенно доволен и счастлив. Катя производит впечатление не хозяйки, а гостящей родственницы.

Но вообще, по-видимому, она выказала много такту.

Боб хандрит, по обыкновению. То, что ты мне сообщаешь, про Кату и Лароша, поразило меня. Радуюсь, — но как-то не доверяю; не надолго! Дай Бог, чтобы Петру Ивановичу удалось что-нибудь найти! Не пройдёт и месяца, как мы уже, вероятно, увидимся!
