Милый Толя! Ты очень верно догадался, что я что-то от тебя скрываю, — но этого что-то ты не угадал. Дело вот в чем. В конце мая совершилось одно обстоятельство, которое я до времени хотел скрыть от тебя и от всех близких и дорогих людкй, дабы вы напрасно не тревожились о том, как, что, на ком, зачем, хорошо ли я делаю и т. д. Я хотел кончить все дело и потом уж открыться вам все. ''Я женюсь''. При свидании расскажу тебе, как это случилось. Я сделал предложение в конце ''мая'', хотел устроить свадьбу в начале июля и потом уж известить всех вас об этом. Но твоё письмо меня поколебало. Во-первых, я не могу же избегнуть встречи с тобой, а ломать комедию, выдумывать причины, почему я не еду с тобой в Каменку, — было бы трудно. Во-вторых, я сообразил, что без благословения (предварительного Папаши) неловко соединиться брачными узами. Итак, я решил открыться теперь же. Передай Папочке прилагаемое письмо. Пожалуйста, не беспокойся обо мне, я поступил очень обдуманно и приступаю к этому важному шагу в жизни совершенно покойно. Что я совершенно покоен, это ты можешь вывести из того, что в виду близкой свадьбы я мог написать две трети оперы. Я женюсь на девушке не особенно молодой, но вполне порядочной и имеющей одно главное достоинство: ''она влюблена в меня, как кошка''. Она совершенно бедна. Зовут её ''Антонина Ивановна Миилюкова'', она родная сестра мужа Настеньки Хвостовой. Итак, я не талька объявляю тебе о предстоящей свадьбе, но и приглашаю на неё. Ты будешь, вместе с Котеком, единственными свидетелями венчания, которое должно произойти тотчас после твоего поезда. Затем ты уедешь в Каменку, а я проведу недели три с ''женой'' (как это странна звучит!). Я выговорил себе право весь август пропутешествовать. В Каменке я буду, но. долго. не останусь. Лечиться мне ''необходимо'', необходимо. также ''докончить оперу''. Всё эта я сделаю, уехавши на Кавказ или за границу, если только денег хватит. Жена, между тем, наймёт и устроит квартиру, так что. я возвращусь в лоно своего ''семейства''. Итак, до свиданья, любезный шафер. Жду тебя 6-го числа утром, в Москве в Крестовоздвиженском переулке.
