Только что получил Ваше письмо и тороплюсь ответить только несколько слов, чтобы застать Вас ещё в Браилове. Завтра пошлю Вам более подробное письмо в Вену.

Я чувствую себя неизмеримо спокойнее и лучше. Симпатичная среда, в которой я теперь вращаюсь, тишина и мир, а также леченье водами, которое я начал в прошлую субботу, совершенно воскресили меня. Нужно признаться, что я обнаружил среди постигшего меня испытания необычайное малодушие и совершенное отсутствие мужества. Теперь мне совестно, что я до такой ужасной степени мог пасть духом и поддаться мрачной нервной экзальтации. Пожалуйста простите, что я причинил Вам беспокойство и тревогу. Я ''твёрдо'' уверен, что выйду теперь победителем из несколько тяжёлого и щекотливого положения. Нужно будет побороть в себе чувство ''отчуждённости'' относительно жены и оценить по достоинству её хорошие стороны. А они у неё несомненно есть.

Я до такой степени теперь оправился, что даже приступил на днях к инструментовке ''Вашей'' симфонии. Один из двух моих братьев, на суждение которого я очень полагаюсь, остался очень доволен тем, что я ему сыграл из этой симфонии. Надеюсь, что ''Вам'' она понравится тоже. Это главное. До свиданья, милый и дорогой друг.

Your letter has just arrived, and I'm hastening to send you some words in reply in order to catch you still at [[Brailov]]. Tomorrow I will send you a more detailed letter to [[Vienna]].

I feel immeasurably calmer and better. The pleasant milieu in which I find myself now, the peace and quiet, as well as the water treatment I commenced last Saturday have revived me completely. I must confess that faced with the trial that befell me, I displayed incredible faintheartedness and a total absence of courage. Now I am ashamed that I could lose heart to such a terrible degree and succumb to a gloomy nervous exaltation. Please forgive me for having troubled and alarmed you. I am ''firmly'' convinced that I shall now emerge victorious from this somewhat difficult and delicate situation. I will have to overcome in myself this sense of ''alienation'' with regard to my wife and duly appreciate her good features. For without any doubt she does have these.
