	[[Tolya]]! Until I am properly settled in here, I won't write to you regularly, but only when I have fresh impressions. My fresh impressions of ''[[San-Remo]]'' are ''awful''; I'm not speaking about the location and the climate; although, arriving when it was already quite dark, I saw nothing, but judging by the delights that I enjoyed on the way, it must be marvellous here. But I'm referring to the hotel. Having seen from Baedeker that there is a ''Victoria'' hotel, a long way from the centre, I chose this hotel for my first stop, imagining that it would be both magnificent and cheap. It turned out, firstly, that it was packed. We were put into a tiny room, where there was nothing save for bare essentials, and I even had to write on a small dressing table. There is a price list hanging in the room, from which I see the following prices: 1) room 8 francs; 2) dinner (outside the table d'hôte) 8 francs, and if you ask for it in the room, then it's 10! 3) morning coffee 1.75, and 2 if it's in the room (they insist that coffee also be drunk at the table d'hôte), etc. etc. When [[Alyosha]] and I went to the dining room, the dinner was ending and the public were leaving. There were at least 100, if not more, ladies and gentlemen in their finery, who were looking over us from head to to with haughty astonishment etc. etc. You can imagine how this was to my taste! And Baedeker says there are no furnished rooms here at all; what am I to do?! I've absolutely no idea — but one thing is certain: we cannot afford to live here. Anyway, tomorrow, when it's light, I'll go to look around. I think of [[Clarens]], of the dear honest Mayors, with such love, with such regret! What a shame that [[Modest]] decided to come here! The hotel was thoroughly to my taste, i.e. an old-ancient house with thick walls, doors a quarter of an arshin thick, lopsided, and ''completely empty''. We were given a whole magnificent apartment with a huge hearth, already blazing. After drinking tea, we went to bed, and for some reason I slept abominably, with twitching, etc. We spent the whole of the following day, i.e. 30/18, gadding about. Amongst other things, we climbed the church tower, from which there's a wonderful view of the whole of [[~~Geona~~]]. In the evening we went to the theatre, where they were giving the most tedious "''L'Africaine''", which moreover was badly performed. We left at one o'clock today. The journey was wonderful. The rest you know from the start of the letter. I daresay we won't be staying here unless we find cheap and comfortable accommodation.		I owe you two whole days. Толя! Пока я окончательно не устроюсь здесь — не буду тебе писать аккуратно, а как придётся, под свежим впечатлением. Свежее впечатление от ''Сан-Ремо ужасное''! Т. е., я не говорю о местоположении и климате; хотя, приехавши, когда уже было совсем темно, я ничего не видел, но судя по тем прелестям, которыми я наслаждался дорогой, здесь должно быть восхитительно. Но я говорю об отеле. Усмотрев из Бедеккера, что есть отель ''Виктория'', очень удалённый от центра, я выбрал для первой остановки этот отель, вообразив себе, что он великолепен, ''пусти'' дёшев. Оказалось, во-первых, что все переполнено. Нас поместили в Крошечной комнатке, где кроме самого необходимого ничего нет, даже писать приходится на маленьком туалетном столике. В комнате висит прейскурант. Из него усматриваю следующие цены: 1) комната 8 франков; 2) обед (вне табль д'ота) 8 франков, а если спросить в комнату, то 10! 3) кофе утром 1.75, а если в комнате, то 2 (требуется, чтоб и кофе пили в table d'hôte) и т. д. и т. д. Когда мы пошли с Алёшей в столовую, то обед кончался и публика выходила. Тут было по крайней мере 100, если не более, расфранчённых дам и кавалеров, которые с горделивым изумлением осматривали нас с ног до головы и т. д. и т. д. Ты можешь себе представить, как все это в моем вкусе! А Бедеккер говорит, что здесь меблированных комнат вовсе нет; что я буду делать! Решительно не знаю, — но одно несомненно, — это то, что нам жить здесь не по карману. Впрочем, завтра, когда будет светло, пойду искать и смотреть. С какой любовью, с каким сожалением я думаю о Кларане, о милых, честных Маиорах! Как жаль, что Модест решил сюда ехать!

Я в долгу перед тобой за целых два дня. Третьего дня в 6 часов мы выехали из Милана, а в 11¾ были уже в Генуе и остановились в ''Hôtel des quatre nations''. Отель совершенно в моем вкусе, т. е. старый-престарый дом с толстыми стенами, с дверями в четверть аршина толщины, расположенный неправильно и ''совершенно пустой''! Нам отвели целый великолепный апартамент с громадным, уже пылавшим камином. Напившись чаю, легли спать и я почему-то спал отвратительно с вздрагиваниями и т. д. Целый следующий день, т. е. 30/18, мы прогуляли. Взбирались, между прочим, на вышку одной церкви, с которой прекрасный вид на всю Геную. Вечером были в театре, где давали скучнейшую «''Африканку''» и притом скверно исполненную. Сегодня выехали в час. Дорога чудесная. Остальное тебе известно из начала письма. Я, наверное, здесь не останусь, если не найду дешёвого и удобного помещения.

Но до чего здесь тепло! Пришлось сейчас открывать окно потому, что в комнате слишком жарко, а Алёшу сейчас укусил комар, прилетевший на свет. Но что мне в теплоте, когда приходится писать на туалетном столике и платить 8 фр[анков] за обед. Целую тебя. Сегодня из Генуи я написал Папаше. Целую тебя, его и Лиз[авету] Мих[айловну].
