	Был в этот день осчастливлен посещением генерала Шеншина, моего кредитора. Господи, что это за дурак и чего только я не натерпелся, пока он сидел у меня. Я так отвык от ''гостей'', от дурацких разговоров, от наглого приставания ''сыграть'' что-нибудь. И вдруг является этот сукин сын, торжественно объявляет, что он вздохнул свободно, покинувши Россию, ''эту проклятую трущобу'', что все у нас мерзко, что политика России ''подлая'', что у нас только умеют воровать, что солдаты наши плохи, что Англия действует справедливо. И всё это говорит ''ростовщик'', по уму и развитию стоящий ниже даже Бочечкарова! В довершение всего он говорит мне: «Нет, батенька, не уйду, пока Вы мне не сыграете чего-нибудь новенького». 			On this day I had the good fortune to be visited by General Shenshin, my creditor. Lord, what a fool he is, and how I suffered while he was sitting with me. I'm so unaccustomed to having ''guests'', to stupid conversations, to impudent pestering ''to play'' something. And suddenly this son of a bitch appears, gravely announces that he breathed freely on leaving Russia, ''these damned backwoods'', that everything to do with us is loathsome, that Russia's politics are ''vile'', that we only know how to steal, that our soldiers are poor, that England is acting rightfully. And all this is being said by a ''money-lender'', whose intelligence and standing is inferior even to Bochechkarov! To top it all, he said to me: "No, dear boy, I won't be leaving until you play me something new". And so on, and so on. For me, Shenshin's visit was a foretaste of those vulgar and stupid encounters that would inevitably await me in Russia. In general, the closer the moment of departure comes, the more terrified I become. What is there to say? I've endured many sad moments abroad, but there were also many pleasant ones, and most importantly, I had complete freedom. I finished the concerto today. I exchanged a credit note, sent by [[Nadezhda Filaretovna]].

			The weather was magnificent, but not all day. At 5 o'clock there was a thunderstorm. I indulged in idleness and rest. Погода великолепная, но не весь день. В 5 часов была гроза. Я наслаждаюсь праздностью и отдыхом. Котек получил от Давыдова отказ, выраженный, правда, в очень мягкой форме, очень вежливо и ласково, но всё-таки неприятный и очень его огорчивший. Грустно и мне за него. И к чему было обещать ему это? Давыдов очень много потеряет. Такого скрипача, как он, они найдут; — но такого хорошего музыканта — не скоро.

День небывало чудный. Ничего подобного ещё ни разу здесь не было. Утром ездили на пароходе в Шильон, а возвратились на лодке. Обедала у нас сегодня известная тебе ''Каблукова''. По этому случаю муж хозяйки поймал небывало огромную и вкусную форель. Каблукова очень мила, а также и её дочка. Ходили вдвоём с повеселевшим немножко Котиком в Chaudron. Ах, как хорошо сегодня! По возвращении были все трое в ванне. Получил сегодня письмо от Маши Головиной. Ужасно жаль бедную девочку: она очень больна. Сообщает бездну новостей про Гламму. Господи, что это за гадина! Как верны мои инстинктивные мнения о людях, и как я всегда предчувствовал, что эта {{...}} преподлая шлюха и больше ничего.
