Я начинаю бояться, что по поводу экзаменов не получу от тебя ни одного письма; а между тем, мне очень интересно знать, как сошло римское право, и что было потом, и к чему ты готовишься теперь, и т. д. Итак, найди свободную минутку и отпиши.

Про себя сказать хорошего нечего. Всю прошлую неделю про хандрил, чему причиною следующие три обстоятельства: 1) дурная погода, 2) безденежье, 3) утрата всякой надежды найти потерянное либретто.

Про праздники, бывшие здесь, говорить нечего, они известны по газетам. На гуляньи вчера в Сокольниках не был, ибо предпочёл прочесть «Дым», которому посвятил весь вечер и не раскаивался. Очень часто вижусь с Ларошем; познакомился у него недавно с одним очень интересным человеком, здешним профессором университета Бугаевым. Невероятно учёный и очень умный малый; на днях он до глубокой ночи говорил нам об астрономии и последних открытиях в этой области. Боже! Какими мы выходим невеждами из училища! И до какой степени мною овладевает ужас, когда приходится встретить начитанного и истинно просвещённого человека. Скажу тебе, как говаривал нам Постельс: «''Читайте, мои милые, и внимайте, внимайте и читайте!''»

Напиши мне об экзаменах Модеста и попроси его написать мне; от меня он получит письмо на будущей недели. Распоряжайтесь мною на лето, как хотите. Около 28 мая я буду в Питере. Папашу и всех лобызаю. Уехала ли Саша?

I'm beginning to worry that I won't receive a single letter from you about the examinations; and yet I'm very interested to know how you got on with Roman law, what happened next, what you are preparing for now, etc. Therefore find a spare moment and write about it.

As for myself, there's nothing good to say. I was moping about all last week, as a result of the following three circumstances: 1) bad weather, 2) empty pockets, 3) the absence of all hope of finding the lost libretto <ref name="note1"/>.

There's no point telling you about the celebrations which took place here <ref name="note2"/>, since you'll have read about them in the newspapers. I didn't go to the festivities in the Sokolniki Park because I preferred instead to read "Smoke" to the end <ref name="note3"/>. I spent the whole evening on it and don't regret it. I quite often see [[Laroche]]; he recently got to know a very interesting person, a university professor here called [[Nikolay Bugayev|Bugayev]] <ref name="note4"/>. He's a remarkable scientist and a very clever fellow; the other day he stayed up late at night telling us about astronomy and recent discoveries in this field. My God! What ignoramuses we are when we emerge from school. And how horrified I am when it comes to meeting such a well-read and truly enlightened person. I'll say to you what Postels said: "''Read on, my dear, and take heed, take heed and read!''" <ref name="note5"/>.
