Most respected and most kind
Vladimir Vasilyevich! I am writing these lines to you just as Musorgsky's monument is being consecrated. I very much regret that I cannot be present. It is awkward for me to be Petersburg at the present time, because celebrations are now taking place on the occasion of the School's jubilee, and I really do not want to be at these celebrations, if only because I wrote, at the request of the organisers, a march, which must be performed and which is painful for me to hear. This is a pity — it would have been interesting and pleasant to see the celebrations. I am most grateful to the "Musical Well-Wisher" for remembering me once more. Please, kindly convey my keenest gratitude to him; I thank you too, most kind Vladimir Vasilyevich! Since the programme of the "Manfred" Symphony was written by your hand, I think it will not be uninteresting for you to know that this symphony has already been written, and at the present time I am proof-reading the orchestral score. Be so kind, most respected Vladimir Vasilyevich, as to send the prize to me here. Your sincerely grateful and devoted, P. Tchaikovsky |
