Каменка 22 авг[уста] 1882 Анатоша! Так как я хочу самым правильным образом распределить свои занятия, дабы непременно окончить в предстоящую осень оперу, то, между прочим, и для писем назначил кому когда, в какой день, писать, и на тебя пало воскресенье. Вот я и пишу. В Киеве я провёл две ночи и приехал сюда не с утренним, а с вечерним поездом. Меня задержали папиросы, которые не могли быть готовы раньше. Застал я здесь из членов семьи Анну, Тасю и Уку и с ними две гувернантки. К моему великому огорчению, вчера же утром приехал сюда Блуменфельд опять гостить, и живёт в комнате рядом. Присутствие соседа, близкого вообще, стесняет мою свободу в процессе сочинительства, а тем более, когда это музыкант. Я сделал ему такое кислое лицо, что он заметил и обиженно удалился спать, но тем не менее не уезжает и остаётся ещё, кажется, 2 недели. Это очень, очень досадно! И точно нарочно, он приезжает гостить, когда я тут! Тем не менее я рад был приехать в свой угол и рад отдохнуть от суеты, бестолкового образа жизни и пьянства московского. В следующий раз, когда приеду, нужно будет, по возможности, скрываться или у тебя, или у Юргенсона. Я сейчас же привёл все свои вещи в порядок и уже успел сегодня не только побывать у обедни, не только сделать посещения большого дома и Ник[олая] Вас[ильевича], но и вдоволь нагуляется и даже поработать. От Саши ещё покамест никаких известий нет, кроме того, что она благополучно добралась до Севастополя. С нею Ната, Бобик и Митя, который не выдержал переэкзаменовки и взят из гимназии. Я нашёл Анну похорошевшей, а Тасю более неприятной капризной и взбалмошной, чем когда-либо. Коля Переслени и Кат[ерина] Вас[ильевна] здесь. Алекс[андра] Иван[овна] здорова. Пожалуйста, будь покоен и весел, не трать время на пустые споры о пустяках; у тебя есть теперь элементы прочного счастья, и никогда я так не был тобой доволен и за тебя покоен, как теперь. Крепко обнимаю тебя и Паничку, а также лобызаю Володю и кланяюсь Вл[адимиру] Дм[итриевичу].

Kamenka 22 August 1882 Anatosha! Since I want to apportion my activities in the most efficient way, so as to be sure of finishing the opera in the coming autumn, then amongst other things, I have assigned days for whom I should write to and on what day, and you have fallen on Sunday. So here I am writing. I spent two nights in Kiev, and arrived here not with the morning train, but with the evening one. I was delayed by cigarettes, which could not be ready sooner. Amongst the ranks of the family here, I found Anna, Tasya and Uka, and with them two governesses. To my great chagrin, yesterday morning Blumenfeld came here again to stay, and he is living in the next room. The presence of a neighbour, generally so close to me, restricts my freedom in the process of composing, and even more so when he is a musician. I made such a sour face at him that he noticed and went to bed in a huff, but nevertheless he isn't leaving, and will be staying, it seems, for another 2 weeks. This is very, very frustrating! It's just as though he deliberately comes to visit when I'm here! Nevertheless, I was glad to come to my corner and glad to rest from the commotion, the senseless way of life, and the drunkenness of Moscow. Next time I come, if possible, I'll have to hide either with you or at Jurgenson's. I put all my things in order immediately, and today I've already managed not only to attend mass, not only to visit the big house and Nikolay Vasilyevich, but to stroll around to my heart's content, and even to work. Meanwhile, there's still no news whatsoever from Sasha, except that she has safely reached Sevastopol. With her are Natasha, Bobik and Mitya, who didn't pass the re-examination and was removed from the gymnasium. I found Anna prettier and Tasya more unpleasant, capricious and eccentric as ever. Kolya Peresleni and Katerina Vasilyevna are here. Aleksandra Ivanovna is well. Please, keep calm and cheerful, don't waste time on pointless arguments about trifles; you now have the ingredients of a lasting happiness, and I have never been so pleased with you and so at peace for you as I am now. I hug you and Panichka tightly, and also kiss Volodya and bow to Vladimir Dmitryevich.
