Цюрих 18/30 ноября 1884 Голубчик Толя! Я приехал вчера из Давоса сюда, чтобы отдохнуть и удрать на несколько дней в Париж. Я рад, что был в Давосе; это хорошее с моей стороны дело, и ты не поверишь, до чего бедный, упавший духом Котик воспрянул и проникся энергией в борьбе с болезнью. Первое впечатление, как я тебе писал, скорее было благоприятное, но в течение недели я убедился, что положение Котека очень серьёзное, хотя и не безнадёжное. Теперь опасаются для него горловой чахотки ещё больше, чем грудной. Были на этой недели 2 три дня, когда от постоянного изнурительного кашля он не мог вовсе говорить даже тем хрипом, который теперь заменяет ему голос. Но всего страшнее его ежедневная лихорадка. Я был у доктора, который его лечит. Он не теряет нисколько надежды, но грустно то, что по меньшей мере ещё одну зиму нужно будет жить в Давосе. Сознание, что два года, а может и больше, уйдут не на деятельность, а на борьбу с болезнью, убивает Котика, и, признаюсь, меня тоже всего больше мучит эта мысль. Как бы то ни было, но этим посещением Давоса я во всяком случае оказал Котику большую услугу, и мне приятно сознавать это. Спускался я оттуда полдороги на санях, а остальную половину в превосходном дилижансе, в купе, один, и наслаждался красотой зимнего Швейцарского ландшафта. Я останусь в Париже 10 дней; в Москве буду во всяком случае не позже 10-го декабря, ибо хочу присутствовать на репетициях Фантазии, которая пойдёт 15-го. Если рассчитаешь, что письмо поспеет, то напиши в Париж, — но, впрочем, вряд ли, ибо не позже 1-го декабря нашего я выеду. Обнимаю, целую тебя, Паничку и Танюшу. Твой, П. Zurich 18/30 November 1884 Golubchik Tolya! I came here yesterday from Davos, to rest and escape to Paris for a few days. I'm glad that I went to Davos; it was a good thing to do on my part, and you wouldn't believe how much poor downcast Kotik has brightened up and become so energised in the fight against his illness. My first impression, as I wrote to you, was rather more favourable, but during the week I became convinced that Kotek's situation was very serious, although not hopeless. Now they are even more afraid of him having consumption of the throat than on the chest. There were three days during these 2 weeks when, due to a constant, debilitating cough, he couldn't speak at all, not even with the wheezing that now stands in for his voice. But the worst thing is his daily fever. I saw the doctor who is treating him. He hasn't lost hope by any means, but the sad thing is that he will have to live in Davos for at least another winter. The realisation that two years, or even more, will be spent not on activities, but on fighting the disease, is killing Kotek, and I confess, this thought torments me above all. Be that as it may, with this visit to Davos I have in any case rendered Kotik a great service, and it pleases me to know this. I came half way down from there on a sleigh, and the remaining half in a superb diligence, in a compartment, alone, and enjoyed the beauty of the winter Swiss landscape. I'll be staying in Paris for 10 days; in any case I'll be in Moscow no later than 10th December, because I want to attend the rehearsals of the Fantasia, which will be on the 15th. If you consider the letter will catch me, then write to Paris — however, this is unlikely, because I'll be leaving no later than our 1st December. Hugs and kisses to you, Panichka and Tanyusha.
