Москва 8 дек[абря] 1880 г[ода] Вчера вечером приехал в Москву. Помнишь банщика, что мыл (тебя, Колю, Анатолия и меня) в Челышевых банях? Анатолий писал мне в Каменку, что он видел его в других банях и был даже предметам приставаний со стороны банщика. Вследствие этого я всю дорогу думал о нем. Так как Анатолий ожидал меня не вчера, а сегодня, то я не мог провести вечер с ним и по этому случаю отправился в баню. Увы, меня мыл другой! Но уходя я его увидел и был приглашён приехать в тот же вечер, — что я и сделал. Провёл часа три в бане à la Володя Шиловский, т. е. пил, ел, угощал весь персонал, начиная с прикащика, и наконец остался с Васей наедине. Что это за прелесть! Ничего, ничего, молчанье... Я надеялся найти здесь письмо от тебя; меня страшно интересует судьба комедии. Известие о том, что Савина взяла её в свой бенефис, взволновало, обрадовало меня до последней степени. Жду известий. Сегодня репетиция «Онегина». Приедешь ли ты? Думаю, что в случае, если комедия пойдёт, тебе будет и не до того. Увижу на репетиции Бегичева, поговорю с ним о «Благодетеле» и сейчас же дам тебе знать. Каменка оставила во мне самое грустное воспоминание. Но для меня всё-таки было большим благом, что я туда съездил. Я всё-таки отдохнул. Писать некогда. Сейчас иду на репетицию. Целую крепко. Твой, П. Moscow 8 December 1880 I arrived in Moscow last night. Do you remember the baths attendant who washed us (you, Kolya, Anatoly and me) in the Chelyshev baths? Anatoly wrote to me in Kamenka that he had seen the attendant in other baths, and he had even been subjected to harassment from him. Consequently, I thought about him the whole way. Since Anatoly had been expecting me yesterday, rather than today, I couldn't spend the evening with him, and I used the opportunity to set off for the bathhouse. Alas, someone else washed me! But I saw him as I was leaving, and was invited to come that same evening — which I did. I spent three hours in the baths à la Volodya Shilovsky, i.e. I drank, ate, entertained the entire staff, starting with the attendants, and finally I was left alone with Vasya. What a delight! Nothing, nothing, silence... I was hoping to find a letter from you here; I'm terribly interested in the fate of your comedy. The news that Savina accepted it for her benefit performance excited and delighted me in the extreme. I await news. The rehearsal of "Onegin" is today. Will you be coming? I think if the comedy is on, then you won't have the time. I'll see Begichev at the rehearsal, talk to him about "The Benefactor" and let you know immediately. Kamenka has left me with the saddest memories. But it was still a great blessing for me that I went there. I had a rest anyway. There's no time to write. I'm just off to the rehearsal.
