Ваше Высокопревосходительство! Если бы лестное для меня приглашение Ваше написать музыку кантаты, имеющей быть исполненной в Москве, по случаю коронации Его Императорского Величества, было получено мною два месяца тому назад, то я почёл бы не только величайшей честью, но и величайшим счастием исполнить столь прекрасную и столь желанную мной задачу. В настоящее время, будучи весьма польщён предложением Вашим, я тем не менее смущаюсь трудностью предлежащего мне труда и ввиду крайней близости срока, к которому труд этот должен быть окончен, предвижу, что спешность работы отзовётся и на качестве её. Тем не менее могу обещать Вашему Высокопревосходительству, что, по мере всех сил и способностей своих, постараюсь сколь возможно хорошо и скоро положить на музыку прекрасный текст г. Майкова. Принося Вашему Высокопревосходительству нижайшую благодарность за оказанную мне честь и покорнейше прося Вас принести от меня таковую же г. министру Императорского двора, имею честь быть Вашего Высокопревосходительства покорнейший слуга, П. Your High Excellency! If your flattering invitation to me to write to music for a cantata to have the honour to be performed on the occasion of the coronation of His Imperial Majesty, had been received by me two months ago, then I should have considered it not only the greatest honour, but also the greatest happiness to perform such a delightful and much desired task. At the present time, being highly flattered by your proposal, I am nevertheless constrained by the difficulty of the work lying before me, and, in view of the extreme proximity of the date by which this work must be completed, I foresee that the urgency of the work will also be reflected in its quality. Nevertheless, I can promise your High Excellency that to the utmost of my strength and capabilities, I shall attempt to set Mr Maykov's marvellous text to music as well and quickly as possible. I offer my deepest gratitude to Your High Excellency of the honour shown to me, and humbly request you to convey the same from me to the Minister of the Imperial Court, having the honour to be Your High Excellency's most humble servant, P.
