12 августа Я ведь твою телеграмму из Харькова понял так, что ты совсем уехал в Каменку, и потому вчера послал письмо туда. Сегодня только, получив твоё письмо, понял в чем дело. Сожалею, что ты не точнее мне дал знать, что ты ненадолго в Каменку; я бы к твоему возвращению приехал бы в Гранкино. И сегодня я уже собрался было ехать, но Толя и Параша так умоляли остаться, что не хватило духа отказать. Да и в самом деле, стоило ли бы теперь ехать, для того чтобы через несколько дней снова разъехаться по сторонам. Итак, я решил дождаться Вас здесь. Но, по крайней мере, нельзя ли вам хоть двумя, хоть одним днём раньше выехать, чтобы подальше тут погостить вместе. В моем письме, посланном вчера в Каменку и которое тебе, надеюсь, перешлют, я тебе сообщил о разных очень благоприятных обстоятельствах, касающихся оперы. Корректуру свою я кончил и пишу теперь на всех парах сюиту для оркестра. Относительно кольца исполнены все, какие нужно, формальности, чтобы оно осталось за мной, но ранее трёх месяцев со дня закладки я получить его не могу. Я уж давно свыкся с мыслью о потере 400 рубл[ей] и примирился с этим. С Юргенсоном я сделал так: написал ему письмо, в коем ласково, но резко высказал, что опера моя стоит не 1000, а по крайней мере 10000 рубл[ей], но, ввиду его ограниченных средств, такой суммы с него не возьму, а требую, чтобы он заплатил 2000 за право собственности, 300 за переложение, 100 за корректуру, итого 2400. Он сейчас же отвечал, что совершенно согласен. Мы уже несколько раз виделись, и отношения, по-видимому, те же, — но я чувствую, что не могу забыть, что он хотел обидеть меня за мою безответность и за то, что никогда я не внимал наветам бесчисленного людей, говоривших, что он эксплуатирует меня. 12 August I took your telegram from Kharkov to mean that you had left for Kamenka altogether, and that's why I sent a letter there yesterday. Only today, having received your letter, did I understand what the matter was. I'm sorry that you didn't let me know more accurately that you were only going to Kamenka for a little while; I would have been in Grankino by the time you returned. And today I was about to leave, but Tolya and Parasha were begging me to stay so much that I didn't have the heart to refuse. And indeed, would it be worth going now, only to go our separate ways again in a few days? Therefore, I've decided to wait for you here. But, couldn't you at least leave two days, or even one day earlier, so that we could stay together here for a while? In the letter I sent yesterday to Kamenka, and which I hope will be forwarded to you, I told you about various favourable circumstances concerning the opera. I finished my proofreading, and am now going full steam ahead on a suite for orchestra. Regarding the ring, all the necessary formalities have been completed so that it will remain mine, but I cannot receive it less than three dates from the date it was pawned. I've long since become used to the idea of losing 400 rubles, and have reconciled myself with this. I did the following with Jurgenson: I wrote him a letter in which I politely but firmly stated that my opera was not worth 1000, but rather at least 10000 rubles, but, in view of his limited funds, I shall not take such a sum from him, but rather demand that he pay 2000 for the ownership rights, 300 for the transcription, 100 for the proofreading, making a total of 2400. He replied at once that he agreed completely. We've already seen each other a few times, and our relations appear to be the same, but I feel that I cannot forget that he wanted to affront me for my irresponsibility, and for the fact that I never paid attention to the slander of countless people who said that he was exploiting me. It was most unpleasant and somehow bitter for me that I didn't visit Grankino. Forgive me, Modichka — but this is how circumstances turned out. How I wish that you would come sooner! I kiss you both.
