24 November 1884 Paris The only thing in particular that has happened since the last time I wrote is that today I spent the whole day until 5 o'clock with Madame Auclair. She treated me to lunch: but what a lunch! I really don't remember ever eating anything more delicious; at the same time, both her and her husband's hands are very dirty, and in general they both more resemble simple peasants. Monsieur Auclair has asked me to take him to the "Grand Opéra" next week: he has never been there in his life. There was nothing to be done, I'll have to fuss over him. Georges was charming today. I have long thought that the praises Madame Auclair lavishes on him for his mildness and intelligence are merely a wish to say something pleasant to me. But today, having spent several hours with him, I am convinced that this is true. Notwithstanding the fact that everyone spoils him, starting with Madame Auclair, he is surprisingly obedient, kind and sweet. Not once did he try to be capricious in the slightest. I felt great affection for him today. And how handsome he is! If he were in the hands of a mother who knew how to dress up a child smartly, he would be a sight to behold. Madame Auclair, by all appearances, is not the cleanest of women, and it cannot be said that Georges was perfectly clean. But we probably owe his excellent state of health to her. The Beliards are more obliging, considerate and nice to me than ever. Since I wrote to you, I've been to the Grand-Opéra ("Hamlet"), to the "Palais Royal", where Mr Maurice Ordonnau's play is causing a furore, and is actually funny, and yesterday to the "Comédie". They were giving "Les jeux de l'amour et du hasard", which I'd never seen before in my life (Brosat was delightful), and "Le gendre de Monsieur Poirier". The latter has the same actors: Got and Delannoy were astonishing; they are ideal, perfection, and although Got is more characteristic and sympathetic in the essence of the role, Delannoy, in my opinion, is closer to perfection as a performer.
