Москва 29 сент[ября] Милый Модя! Я опять в Москве. Нужно было отправиться, чтобы денег взять и ещё чтобы решить вопрос о Лароше, который наконец вывел из терпения Танеева своим решительным нежеланием посещать классы. Мы сообща решили, что Ларош берет годовой отпуск, но это, в сущности, чтобы его удаление не имело характера изгнания. Он очень боялся, что его выгонят, и не хотелось его огорчать. Сегодня возвращаюсь в Мадино, а в субботу 4-го октября должен опять быть здесь для очень важного заседания Дирекции о наших музыкальных делах. В нынешнем году на целую треть меньше членов. Это ужасно огорчительно. Кроме того, 4-го же октября по случаю того, что Карлуше Альбрехту минет 50 лет, ему даётся от консерваторских профессоров и Дирекции большой обед. В воскресенье уеду опять к себе и в Петербург приеду 14-ro числа в день первого представления «Гарольда». Направник писал мне, что очень желал бы, чтобы я был, и я буду непременно. Но так как я почти убеждён, что опера будет отложена, то дабы не слишком засидеться в­ Петербурге, я раньше 14-го и не приеду. Нужно немного посидеть дома и поработать. Видел Н. Д. Кондр[атьева] и Легошина при проезде. Тороплюсь ужасно и потому больше ничего не пишу. Целую крепко. Извини, что получишь не вовремя деньги. П. Чайковский Количку обнимаю.

Moscow 29 September Dear Modya! I'm in Moscow again. I had to come in order to collect the money, and also to resolve the question of Laroche, who had finally exhausted Taneyev's patience with his stubborn unwillingness to attend classes. Together we decided that Laroche will take a year's leave, but this was essentially so that his removal would not have the character of an expulsion. He was very afraid of being expelled, and we didn't want to upset him. I'm returning to Madino today, but on Saturday 4th October I have to be here again for a very important meeting of the Directorate about our musical business. This year there are a whole third fewer members. This is awfully disappointing. Besides this, also on 4th October, the Conservatory professors and the Directorate are throwing a grand dinner for Karlusha Albrecht's 50th birthday. I'll be going back home on the Sunday, and coming to Petersburg on the 14th, the day of the first performance of "Harold". Nápravník wrote to me that he would very much wish me to be there, and I certainly shall be. But since I'm almost certain that the opera will be postponed, so as not to stay in Petersburg too long, I won't be arriving before the 14th. I need to sit at home for a little while and work. I saw N. D. Kondratyev and Legoshin along the way. I'm in a terrible rush, and therefore won't write anything more. I kiss you hard. Sorry that you won't receive the money on time. P.
