27 ноября 1887 село Майданово Дорогая Юлия Петровна! Конец первой части, т. е. все, что происходит после Зыкова, понравилось мне меньше Зыкова. Он растянут, что, впрочем, Вы сами заметили. Необходимо сократить; в начале тоже, мне кажется, не мешало бы кое-что поурезать. Но в общем, повторяю опять, горячие поздравления и себя и Вас с открытием нового, оригинального, тёплого, симпатичного русского таланта. Теперь у меня следующая программа действий. Я уже отослал рукопись брату Модесту. 8 декабря я буду в Петербурге и, каково бы ни было мнение брата, отправляюсь с рукописью к новому редактору «Русского вестника» Ф. Н. Бергу и читаю ему Ваше произведение. Но, ради Бога, скажите мне, что я должен отвечать ему на вопросы: есть ли продолжение, каковы размеры повести, когда Вы можете прислать остальное и т. д. и т. д. В случае если и Берг найдёт, что кое-что нужно сократить, нужно ли Вам присылать рукопись или Вы имеете у себя другую? Пожалуйста, Юлия Петровна, поскорее ответьте мне на все эти вопросы. Пламенно желаю, что бы Вы продолжали «Тасю» с возможно большей энергией, дабы поскорее пожать плоды трудов Ваших. Ух, как напечатание «Таси» благодетельно подействует на Вас, и какую силу это придаст Вам в борьбе с невзгодами!! Про себя скажу, что с грехом пополам отдыхаю в деревне. Здоровье очень неважно и подчас беспокоит меня серьёзно, а обращаться к доктору не хочется. Ну как он скажет: сидите смирно дома, не то плохо, — а мне нужно заграницу ехать! Постановка «Чародейки» есть положительный неуспех!!! На 7-ом представлении, в Петербурге, где постоянно дерутся из-за билетов в оперу, — театр был более чем наполовину пуст!!!! Это очень огорчает меня. В чем дело? Не могу понять. Неужели враждебно настроенные рецензенты, бешено ругавшие «Чародейку», тому причиной? Но ведь и прежде, кроме брани, я ничего не видел от этих господ. Нет, что-ни будь не то, а что? — не знаю. До свиданья, добрейшая Юлия Петровна! Будьте здоровы! Ваш, П. Чайковский

But in general, I repeat again, hearty congratulations to you and myself with the discovery of a new, original, sympathetic Russian talent. I now have the following plan of action. I have already sent the manuscript to my brother Modest. On 8 December I shall be in Petersburg and, whatever my brother's opinion, I shall bring the manuscript to the new editor of the "Russian Herald", F. N. Berg and read your work to him. But, for God's sake, tell me what I must reply to his questions: is there a continuation, how long is the story, when can you send the rest, etc. etc. In the event that Berg considers that something needs to be shortened, should I send the manuscript to, or do you have another? Please, Yuliya Petrovna, reply with the answers to all these questions as soon as possible. It is my fervent wish that you continue "Tasya" with the greatest possible energy, so that you can reap the fruits of your labours as soon as possible. Oh, what a beneficial effect the publication of "Tasya" will have on you, and what strength it will give you in the fight against adversity!! As for myself, I can say that I am hardly resting in the country. My health is not very good, and sometimes this seriously worries me, but I do not want to see a doctor. He would only say that it is not that bad, and to sit quietly at home — but I need to go abroad! The production of "The Enchantress is an absolute failure!!! At the 7th performance, in Petersburg, where they are constantly fighting over opera tickets, the theatre was more than half empty!!!! This upsets me greatly. What is the matter? I cannot understand. Could the reason really be the hostile reviewers who furiously abused "The Enchantress"? But even before this I had never had anything but abuse from these gentlemen.
