16-го октября г[ород] Тифлис Милый Модя! Наступает конец нашего пребывания в Тифлисе. Завтра у меня репетиция симфонического концерта; через 2 дня другая, в субботу 20-го числа концерт; 22[-го] выезжаем. Я заеду к Ипполиту, — а то он очень обидится. Коля же хочет проехать прямо, но я думаю, что можно без всяких опасений оставить его одного от Ростова до Питера. Жалко отсюда уезжать теперь; то есть, что это за погода, — выразить невозможно. Третьего дня ездили в день рождения Пани обедать за город в местечко, которое я особенно люблю. Обедали, конечно, на чистом воздухе, и весело было ужасно. Однако ж я очень устал от безалаберной жизни и постоянных кутежей и помышляю с немалым удовольствием о нескольких днях пребывания во Фроловском. Не придавай ни малейшего значения выходке «Нов[ого] вр[емени]» по поводу «Симфонии». Неужели ты в моем опыте не видишь указаний на то, как бесцельны подобные газетные нападки? На них можно посердиться, но отнюдь не бояться их действия на публику. Если справедливо известие «Нов[ого] в[ремени] », что ты сократил пиэсу, — то я этому радуюсь! Сокращение я разумею такое, чтобы 5-го действия вовсе не было. Если помнишь, я всегда боялся за 5-е действие. Но что ты придумал вместо него? Очень интересно знать. Первый конец, т. е. «Милочка! Спаси меня! » мне тоже не нравился. Ах эти концы! Вся штука в них. Я тебе телеграфировал, прося прекратить поиски квартиры, однако ты окажешь мне услугу, Модинька, если сходишь в бывшую Знаменскую гостиницу и посмотришь, нет ли там углового, удобного для меня с Алексеем номера. Скажи Бобу, что готовых халатов теперь здесь нет, но я куплю ему материю, и сошьём в Питере. Коля тоже купил для тебя и себя не халаты, а материи. Обнимаю. П. Ча[йковский]

16th October г[ород] Tiflis Dear Modya! The end of our stay in Tiflis is drawing near. Tomorrow I have a rehearsal for the symphony concert; in 2 days another, on Saturday 20th the concert; on the 22nd we are leaving. I'll call on Ippolit, otherwise he'll be very offended. Kolya wants to press straight on, but I think he can be left on his own from Rostov to Piter without any concerns. It's a pity to leave here now; this weather is impossible to describe. The day before yesterday we went to have dinner outside the city on Panya's birthday in a little place that I'm particularly fond of. Naturally, we dined in the open air, and it was terribly fun. However, I'm very weary of the carefree life and constant carousing, and it's with no small pleasure that I think about spending a few days at Frolovskoye. Don't attach the slightest importance to the machinations in "New Time" regarding "The Symphony". Can you really not see from my experiences just how pointless such newspaper attacks are? You can be angry with them, but you shouldn't be afraid of their effect on the public. If the report in "New Time" is accurate, that you have shortened the play, then I am glad of it! I would have shortened it so that there is no 5th act at all. If you remember, I was always worried about the 5th act. But what did you come up with instead? I'm very interested to know. I didn't like the first ending either, i.e. "Darling! Save me!". Oh these endings! It's all about them. I telegraphed you, asking you to stop looking for an apartment, but you would render me a service, Modinka, if you went to the former Znameskaya Hotel to see if there is a convenient corner room for myself and Aleksey. Tell Bob that there are no ready-made robes here now, but I'll buy the material for him, and we'll sew them in Piter.
